Head Over Heels by Tears for Fears is an earworm to begin with; the literal version is even worse (by which I mean better).

(no subject)

May. 20th, 2008 | 10:08 pm

today we saw a herd of elk! One female was scared of a beaver. She'd kinda paw at it, jump back, then try to figure it out again.

And this morning, dozens of big horned sheep.

The Rockies are amazing! Pics when I get home!

Words to help you get through the winter

Jan. 26th, 2008 | 03:38 pm

It's interesting how words come from culture. We say the Inuit have 40 words for snow, but here are 284 snow words in Inuktitut. About half of them have to do with houses made of snow, and all the things that go wrong with them.  My favourites:

  • Gets snow in eye and is hurt by it: ijaruajuq
  • he makes the snow squeak once underfoot: qiqirrituq
  • hole made by a jet of urine in the snow: quqtaq
  • does gymnastics in a snow house: ujautaqpuq  (Carefully, one imagines)

And of course, caribou words:

  • caribou gives forth its bovine cry: qakakpuq
  • caribou snot: taliut
  • he imitates a caribou: tuttujaqpuq  (this one could come in handy, given my recent work...)

Cat food.

Dec. 31st, 2007 | 02:03 pm

Any of you cat fans have thoughts on what kind of (preferably dry) cat food is best?  I don't want to cheap out, but cat food prices are all over the map.  And the advice I find online is everywhere from "just meet the minimum standards" to "buy nothing but the finest organic duck meat" to "cats should be vegans hurrrrr".

Mostly meat is the best, I think, and keeping the carbs down is important because cats are obligate carnivores, not cornmeal-ivores.  Any preferences?

Who's laughing now? (still the US)

Nov. 3rd, 2007 | 09:16 pm

Is it news in the US that the Canadian dollar is at an all-time high*?  It's a big deal here, because you know those super-high "in Canada" prices on books?  Yeah, we're still paying those.  So like many others, we took a shopping trip across the border today.
Not much to report, except:
Buggy parking only

For the record, we did most of our shopping in little locally owned stores, not Walmart. :)
*modern high, but it didn't float before the 50s.

Crime/Mystery

Sep. 4th, 2007 | 11:16 pm
mood: mysterious! mysterious!

Deceased mantis was found at the bottom of the mantis enclosure.  Mantis #2 is the prime suspect, but the moth that was put in there for food isn't being ruled out at this point.

Cause of death: excessive nibbles to the thorax and femora.

Witnesses say that Mantis #1 and #2 were lovers, and the killing may have been out of spite, or to provide nourishment for mantis #2's developing eggs.  A large Chimo Cat was spotted in the vicinity despite recent Bitter Apple applications and the admonishment of her owners.

Suspects are being questioned.

Mantodea is love

Sep. 1st, 2007 | 06:29 pm

My mantis cup just runneth over this summer!  I've found three in the past week, and kept two.  I have them together, so I hope they fall in love and make little mantids (instead of just eating each other).

A good man is easy to find

Jul. 14th, 2007 | 06:25 pm

On another subject entirely, let's talk about the wonderful French word bonhomme (lit. "good man").  At my grocery store, there's a big poster:

"Where is the Kool-Aid man", I guess, but I like it better literally:  Where is thus the good man Kool-aid?  Good question!

Other bonhommes:
Bonhomme appears when it's safe to cross the street
A snowman is a bonhomme de neige
There's the famous Bonhomme of Quebec City's Carnaval.  He's a little creepy.

Y a-t-il des autres bonhommes?

The internet makes you ___________

Jul. 2nd, 2007 | 04:54 pm

Part of an argument on the talk page for the Mama's Family wikipedia article:

DtownG, stop adding the word proactive under Mama's description

No, because if you watched the show you'd know that the term proactive describes the Thelma character. Unless you can come up with a valid reason why it SHOULDN'T be there, stop editing it out. — DtownG 23:17, 29 July 2006 (UTC)

While I think proactive is a unique word, it has no bearing on the mama's family character. What really should be going on here is you giving reasons to support why you believe it should stay on the page and not be removed. Because frankly, my valid reason is that mama didn't act this way constantly thusly you cannot label her as proactive. She was constantly preparing beforehand to prevent thing from happening. That doesn't make sense. What show are you thinking of? Thelma Harper is a woman known for her sarcastic remarks and quick comebacks.

I'm really not interested in getting into a long conversation about this, but really I'd have to ask you what show you were watching to not see that Mama was *always* pro-active. For example: When she was mugged, she took self defense classes and later beat her attacker...when a shady car salesmen tried to rip her old, she settled the score...when Vint was accused of being the courteous crook, she sought to clear his name...when the family was being conned by the phony channeler, she exposed her.

Internet, I thought you should know.
